Cherryh has produced several award-winning novels including Hugo Award winning "Downbelow Station(1982)" and "Cyteen(1989)".  If you enjoy either one, you will have become hooked on her  Alliance-Union Universe.  They all share a common history and societal makeup.  World building on an incredible scale. As well as seriously good reads, the societies and politics are fascinating.   Some novels may be out of print, but check for good used copies on Amazon or your local second hand book store, or The Library!

The Foreigner novels *may* be a part of the Alliance/Union universe, but it is never explicitly referenced. There are certainly similarities  in the background of the society which launches the original ship and the conflict  between  the ship & station crew. 

The characters and World building are just as complete as those in Cyteen and Downbelow Station.  An Excellent set of reads.
